The duty of all military prisoners of war is to escape. But in 1943, 80,000 Allied POWs in Italian prison camps were ordered by the War Office to stay put. Wait to be liberated by the Allied armies who would reach them within three weeks. However, it took 21 months, instead. In the meantime, 50,000 POWs risked court martial and went on the run. Most of these men had no training in escape, evasion and survival techniques. No resources other than courage and the kindness of strangers. Italians who were starving themselves, but freely gave whatever food and shelter they could provide.
The 30,000 prisoners who stayed put were transported to German labour camps. 10,000 of those on the run made it to freedom. The rest were re-captured, also sent to Germany and many are, today, still missing in action. This programme tells the extraordinary story of the biggest mass break-out in history with some of the brave men and women who survived because they saw their chance and took it.

It was the biggest flying machine in history. Designed with tried and tested technology. Built by the most experienced airship manufacturer in the world. Operated by a company that had a safety record second to none. Then, in the early evening of 6 May 1937, as the German airship Hindenburg came in to land after a routine, trans-Atlantic flight, flames appeared on the top of the ship. Within one minute the airship was completely destroyed. A third of its passengers, dead. Many more, injured. The official inquiry failed to determine the exact causes of the disaster. Without a proven rational explanation, rumour and innuendo passed into fact and questions about what went wrong, remain.
This programme hitches a ride with modern air accident investigators as they get closer to the truth than ever before by re-examining all the original evidence from the original inquiry, applying modern methods to investigate. Demonstrating the key issues with stunning graphics from RED VISION.
A breathtaking journey that reveals startling information that may have been overlooked, ignored or was deliberately hidden at the time.

But what if we want to get a bit closer to it – to lift it off the page and see what life in the past was really like? Welcome to REVIVAL!.
REVIVAL sets out to test and recreate life in the past. Led by energetic and hands on historian, Jules Hudson, REVIVAL travels back in time in the company of Britain’s Living History Groups, lifting history off the page. Swapping their creature comforts, they recreate life and events from every period in history, from Roman legionnaires, World War I fighter aces, and the Brits involved in the American Civil War to the life on board a 15th century ship or as a tank crew in WW2. This is history at its most accessible. From Parliamentarians to Pirates, Cavaliers to Centurions, REVIVAL takes living history to its extremes!.

His documentary is the intimate tale of families on opposing sides of the so-called security barrier in the Jenin-Afula area. A story of the dilemmas they faced when working as multinationals - most evidently during World War II. Of course it is also a history of grand collapses and great triumphs. It was danish engineers who constructed the airports for the allied forces on Iceland. But it was also danish contractors who worked for the germans in the occupied countries in Norway, Poland, Yugolavia and France. A true multi-national dilemma. View episode four for this topic.

The victims tell of their lives and hopes before their world was shattered; their pain and anger after the bombing, and their long and difficult road to recovery. And, given that both victims and attackers, are young, it is made with the pace, music and visual panache that a young audience expects.

"Don't make a saint of me," Francis of Assisi told a friend - even as his charisma and holiness were dazzling his contemporaries and generating a legend that has lasted almost a millennium. Reluctant Saint shows us a Saint Francis who transcends the image familiar to even the least religious among us: wealthy playboy, soldier, businessman, preacher, defender of the poor, mystic and - later - a guiding light to ecologists and animal rights activists.
Filmed on location in Italy, Reluctant Saint captures all the violence, color, and mystery of Francis' time - time like our own, full of crisis, craving for reform and for a deeper, simpler, more personal faith. Reluctant Saint offers new insights into a life that has engaged the hearts and minds of millions over the centuries.

Although few historical figures inspire more celebration than Ireland's St. Patrick, the vast majority of Americans could not offer many details about him. If pressed, they would incorrectly describe Patrick as an Irishman (he was English) who drove the snakes out of Ireland (Ireland never had snakes).
The special takes a dramatic new look at one of the best-loved and least-understood icons of world religion, and features the voices of two of Ireland's top actors, with narration by Liam Neeson, and Gabriel Byrne supplying the voice of Patrick. On-air commentary is provided by renowned Irish-American author Frank McCourt, who offers keen insight on how a foreign evangelical would have interacted with the Irish. Additional commentary is provided by a group of noted scholars and authors, including Philip Freeman, author of the upcoming book "St. Patrick of Ireland: A Biography," David R. Howlett of Oxford University and Dáibhí Ó Cróinín - Historian, National University of Ireland, Galway. "Patrick" was produced and directed by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Pamela Mason Wagner.
